Field Trips

Architecture & Collective Life has organised field trips to local areas of interest. Most trips depart from the Matthew Building Perth Road Lobby at 10:00am on Thursday morning. Minibuses provided as required. If you are interested, please sign up on our University Shop (£2). Spaces are limited to approximately 15 participants each, and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Claypotts Castle – Built in the 1580s, Claypotts Castle is one of the best preserved examples of a 16th Century Z-plan tower house in Scotland.

Architecture Walking Tour of Dundee – A student-led tour of the buildings and special sites in Dundee, including Gardyne’s Land (1560s, the oldest fragment in Dundee), the 19th century mill buildings, McManus Galleries, and the new waterfront. The tour should take about an hour and a half, and is weather dependent.

D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum, University of Dundee – The unique collection of specimens by collected by Sir D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson, the first Professor of Biology at Dundee and author of On Growth and Form (1917).

The Dundee Docklands – Forth Ports Dundee is the most northerly port within Forth Ports; it is one of the largest economic generators in the City of Dundee and the Tayside region of eastern Scotland. It is one of the maintenance facilities for North Sea Oil Rigs. Forth Ports is the remaining heavy industry in Dundee.

This trip should take about an hour, door to door.

By Weeds We Live – A guided walk and tasting session of plants, normally considered weeds, taking inspiration from Geddes’s intriguing maxim ‘by leaves we live’. Through the walk we will investigate the ecological importance of weeds and how we might learn from their stories.

A walking tour led by the community arts group, Deveron Projects.

Meet the team from Deveron Projects Thursday afternoon at 1:45pm. Tour lasts an hour and returns in time for the first round table discussion led by Deveron and Jo Vergunst. Maximum of 15 participant walkers.

Present Voices – Future Lives: Housing to 2040 Exhibition – We would also like to bring to your attention the following housing exhibition sponsored by Architecture Design Scotland (A+DS). This exhibition will be in Baxter Park Dundee, Friday 22 November, 6-8:00pm. If you are not attending the conference dinner, you may want to visit the exhibition. There is no sign-up for this event and you will need to make your own way there.
